Manual to Face Serums: A Simple Guide to Choosing What Your Skin Really Needs

There was a time when skincare felt simple. Cleanser, maybe a moisturizer, and we were done. But somewhere along the way, things changed. Shelves became fuller, routines became longer, and words like
serums, actives, and ingredients started to feel a little overwhelming.

If you are someone who feels confused about serums or wondering whether you really need one, then this guide is for you.

Because the truth is — skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. in fact, you just need a moment to understand your skin a little better, and choose what truly supports it — not what trends tell you to buy.

What Exactly Is a Serum (And Why Does It Matter)?

A serum is a lightweight skincare product designed to deliver concentrated ingredients deep into your skin. Unlike moisturizers, which mainly gives hydration and protection, serums are more targeted and focused.

They work on specific concerns like dullness, dryness, uneven skin tone, or early signs of aging.

You can think of it this way — if your skincare routine is a foundation, then a serum is that extra support that helps strengthen it.

But here’s something important:
You don’t need every serum
— in fact, using too many can sometimes do more harm than good.

Before Choosing a Serum, Listen to your Skin

We often end up buying products because they are trending or someone recommended them. But what works for someone else may not always work for you.

So before choosing a serum, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

  • Does my skin feel dry or tight?
  • Is my skin looking dull or uneven?
  • Am I dealing with breakouts or clogged pores?
  • Does my skin feel tired or stressed?

Your answers will guide you better than any trend.

Because skincare, when done mindfully, always starts with understanding.

Types of Serums (Without the Confusion)

If you are wondering which serum is right for you, don't worry — let’s simplify it.

1. Hydrating Serums

If your skin often feels dry, tight (especially after washing), or dehydrated, this is what you need.

Look for ingredients like:

  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Glycerin

These help your skin retain moisture and feel soft and plump.

👉 Perfect for: Dry, dehydrated, or even combination skin.

2. Brightening Serums

If your skin looks little lifeless or uneven, a brightening serum can help restore that normal glow.

Look for:

  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide
These ingredients work gently over time to improve skin tone and radiance.

👉 Perfect for: Dull skin, pigmentation, uneven tone or when your skin just feels "off."

3. Repair and Anti-Aging Serums

As time passes, our skin naturally changes.  These serums help support skin repair and improve texture.

Look for:

  • Retinol (Start slowly and use carefully)
  • Peptides

👉 Perfect for: Fine lines, uneven texture, early signs of aging, or skin that needs a little extra care.

4. Soothing Serums

Sometimes your skin doesn't need correction — it needs calm.

Look for:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Centella Asiatica

👉 Perfect for: Sensitive, irritated, redness, stressed skin or after long, tiring days.

Wondering Which Serum You Should Start With?

If you’re still unsure, here’s a simple way to begin:

·        Dry or dehydrated skin → Go for a hydrating serum

·        Dull skin  & Uneven Tone → Choose a brightening serum

·        For Fine Lines & Skin Texture → Select a Repair & Anti-Aging serum

·        Acne-prone or sensitive skin → Pick a soothing serum

·        First-time user → Start with something gentle like niacinamide

Start with one. Observe your skin. And then decide.

How to Use a Serum (Simple & Effective)

Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated.

Follow this easy routine:

  1. Cleanse your face
  2. Apply toner (if you use one)
  3. Take 2–3 drops of serum
  4. Gently press it into your skin
  5. Follow with a moisturizer

That’s it.

No need for a 10-step routine. Consistency matters more than doing too much.

A Few Simple Tips Before You Start

  • Always do a patch test before trying a new serum
  • Start slowly, especially with strong ingredients like retinol
  • Avoid mixing too many actives together
  • Give your serum time to show results

Remember, skincare is not about quick fixes — it’s about consistency.

Less is More (Always)

This is something we don’t hear enough.

You don’t need:

  • multiple serums
  • complicated routines
  • or a shelf full of products

One good serum, used consistently, is more than enough.

Because sometimes, doing less actually gives better results.

Making Skincare a Moment, Not a Task

In the middle of busy days and endless responsibilities, we often forget to slow down.

Applying a serum can be more than just another step in your routine.
It can be a small moment of care.

A moment where you pause.
A moment where you reconnect with yourself.

Even if it’s just for a minute.

Final Thoughts

There will always be new products, new trends, and new recommendations.

But your skin doesn’t need everything.

It just needs a little attention, a little consistency, and a little understanding.

So, if you haven’t started using a serum yet, this might be your sign to begin — slowly and mindfully.

Choose what feels right for your skin, not what feels trendy.

Let's Talk

Have you started using a serum yet, or are you still figuring our what works for you?

What is your biggest skincare concern right now?

Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel SPF 50+ PA+++ Review: Is it Worth Buying in 2026

Hello Everyone,

Hope you all are doing well!

Summers are here in full swing—and while we all love those bright, golden sunny days, our skin definitely doesn’t feel the same way. Let’s be real—between the heat, tanning, and constant UV exposure, our skin is usually the one taking the hit.

Unlike winters where dryness is the main concern, summers bring along tanning, sunburn, pigmentation, and long-term skin damage. That’s why sunscreen isn’t just an option—it’s absolutely non-negotiable. Because honestly, no skincare routine works if we skip this one step.

But finding the right sunscreen? That’s where the real struggle begins. I used to avoid sunscreens because of that heavy, greasy feeling—until I found something that actually felt comfortable on my skin.

After using it consistently through peak summer days—and already being on my second tube—I’m finally sharing my honest experience with the Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel (SPF 50+ PA+++).

Let’s get right into the review.

About Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel SPF 50+ PA+++:

Not Just a Sunscreen—It’s Skin Protection + Comfort

Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel (SPF 50+ PA+++) is a dermatologically recommended sunscreen designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays, while still feeling super lightweight on the skin.

What it claims?

  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection
  • Helps prevent sunburn, tanning, and pigmentation
  • Lightweight, non-greasy silicone-based formula
  • Suitable for oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin
  • Gives a smooth, matte finish

How is it used?
Using it is very easy:
Take a pea-sized amount and apply evenly on your face and exposed areas at least 15–20 minutes before stepping out in the sun.
Don’t forget to reapply every 2–3 hours, especially if you’re outdoors for long durations.

Composition:

Key ingredients:  It is enriched with:
  • Silicone base – Gives that smooth, velvety texture and blurs pores
  • UV filters – Protect skin from harmful UVA & UVB rays
  • Vitamin E (in many formulations) – Helps in protecting and nourishing the skin
It is generally non-comedogenic, lightweight, and suitable for sensitive skin types.

First Look:

The sunscreen comes in a simple, compact tube packaging that gives a very clinical and dermatologist-trusted vibe—something I personally feel more confident using on my skin.

It’s lightweight, sturdy, and super travel-friendly, so you can easily carry it in your bag without worrying about leakage.

Texture & Finish:

The texture is honestly the highlight of this product.

It’s a clear, smooth, gel-based formula that feels almost like a primer when you apply it. It glides effortlessly on the skin and blends within seconds.

No white cast, no stickiness, and absolutely no greasy feeling—which is such a relief, especially in hot and humid weather.

It leaves behind a soft, matte, velvety finish that actually makes your skin feel fresh rather than heavy.

My Experience with Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel:

When it comes to sunscreens, I’ve always struggled with one thing—they either feel too heavy, too oily, or make my face sweat like crazy.

But Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel turned out to be quite different.

A little backstory—at one point, I was dealing with dull-looking skin, and that’s when I decided to visit a dermatologist. She recommended a very simple routine: a good moisturizer, sunscreen, and just a light layer of powder to set everything. That’s when I was introduced to this sunscreen.

Since then, I’ve been using it along with my Cetaphil moisturizer underneath, and honestly, this combination has worked really well for me—even though I have dry skin.

From the very first use, I noticed how lightweight and breathable it felt. It didn’t clog my pores or cause any breakouts, which is always a concern, especially with sunscreens.

What I loved the most is the matte finish. My skin didn’t look shiny or greasy even after hours, and it actually worked beautifully under makeup—almost like a primer. And saying this from a makeup artist’s point of view—trust me, that’s a big plus.

During peak summer days, it helped reduce tanning and protected my skin whenever I had to step out in the sun. Of course, consistency is key with any sunscreen, but this one made it so much easier for me to stay regular because of how comfortable it feels.

Having already finished one tube and now using my second, I can confidently say this has become one of my go-to sunscreens for daily use.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Let’s be honest—every skin is different, and reactions can vary.

But in my personal experience, I didn’t face any irritation, redness, or breakouts while using this sunscreen. It felt very gentle and skin-friendly.

Still, if you have extremely sensitive skin, doing a patch test is always a safe choice.

Pros of Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel (SPF 50+ PA+++):
  • Lightweight and non-greasy formula.
  • Gives a smooth matte finish.
  • No white cast.
  • Works well under makeup (primer-like effect).
  • Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin.
  • Helps prevent tanning and sunburn.
  • Travel-friendly packaging.

Cons of Ekran Soft Silicone Sunscreen Gel (SPF 50+ PA+++):
  • Might feel slightly dry for very dry skin types.
  • Needs reapplication for effective protection.
  • Slightly on the pricier side.

Will I purchase it again?
Yes, definitely! I’m already on my second tube, and it’s one of those sunscreens that you actually enjoy using—and that makes all the difference.

Will I recommend it?
Absolutely! If you have oily, sensitive, combination, slightly dry, or acne-prone skin and are looking for a sunscreen that feels light, non-greasy, and comfortable for daily wear—this is definitely worth trying.
It protects your skin without making it feel heavy, which is exactly what we need during summers.

An Ideal Guide to Makeup Primer

Primer is a product which is a godsend, believe me!  Priming the face is an important step to add to your makeup routine.  Whether you are a person who wears a full face of makeup on a daily basis or a person who would like to keep it simple with just a BB/CC cream and a tinted lip balm, adding primer to your makeup routine works wonders.

However, priming the face is the step that people often miss out on or just skip it.  In one of my recent post, I have recommended to “always use a primer before applying your makeup” and I have received a few quires on the same as if it is really necessary to use the primer always, so my answer to your question is definitely YES!  It is essential to use a primer always if you are applying the makeup in the monsoon because your makeup can wash off with the rains and primer is a life saver.  And even if it’s not rainy, one should use a primer in all the seasons out there because using a primer underneath your makeup makes a world of a difference.  You will never completely understand this until you’ve tried it on your own.

Primers have numerous benefits to your skin.  It is a base for foundation and/or face makeup which is applied after your moisturizer and before your foundation (BB/CC cream).  It gives you a smooth canvas to work with, it covers facial defects, it ensures a more natural finish, it helps your makeup last longer.  Some primers also contain SPF so it protects your skin from harmful UV rays.  Also, primers help to create an extra layer between your skin and your makeup which protects your skin from any damage that makeup can cause to your skin.  You may know about the face primer, but there are a variety of primers which are available.  There is one for each stage of your makeup, be it for your eye (eyelids and upper eye area), eyelashes, eyebrows, lips, and nails too.

Related Post:  The Face Toners Manual

Primers are of different types, they come in different formulas and shades.  The formulas that are available are gel/silicon-based, water-based and cream based.  And the shades in which they come are green, purple/blue, yellow, peach, and pink.

So do you wondering if the primer comes in so many forms then which one is the right choice for your skin?

Did you say yes?

Well, don’t worry.  Just keep reading and find it out.

If you have excessive red or yellow tones in your skin, you should go for a color-correcting type of primer.  They are the best choice for you.  There are other primers that add luminosity to your skin.  Another primer comes with skincare properties which correct the dark spots or any pigmentation.

  • A green colored primer conceals the areas of redness.  Use this if you have acne prone skin.
  • A light purple/lavender or blue tinted primer brightens the skin tone.  Use this if your skin is sallow.
  • A yellow hue primer evens out a ruddy (pink/light reddish) tone and erases tiredness of skin.  Use this if you have ruddiness in your skin.
  • A peach shade helps to conceal bruising or pigmentation.  Use this if you are looking to conceal the discoloration such as sunburn, veins, under eye circles.
  • A pink shade primer adds radiance to the skin and makes the complexion look healthier.  Use this if you are dealing with a dull complexion.  Brightening/illuminating primer are great options too.
  • If you have oily skin and you are looking for something that will control the oil then you should use a mattifying primer.
  • If you have dry skin and you are looking for something that will nourish your skin then you should go for a hydrating primer.
  • If you are someone who has large open pores and wants to minimize then you should use pore minimizing primer.
  • And if you don’t have any major skin issues and are looking for something that extends the wear time of your makeup, then you should opt for a smoothening primer.

Primers Available in India

There are two main different types of primers; one is silicone-based and the other is water-based.
  • 1.  Silicone-based:

A Silicone-based primer is very popular in the beauty market as it smooths out the texture of the skin.  It has ultra smoothing effects because it contains dimethicone (silicone-based polymers),  The main function of the silicone-based primer is to minimize the pores and fine lines along with increasing the longevity of the makeup.

  • 2.  Water-based:

A water-based primer also extends your makeup wear but it won't cover the fine lines or minimize the pores.  And a water-based primer is best for those who have oilier or acne prone skin or has other skin conditions because sometimes the silicone can clog your pores and you may have slight irritation and/or allergic reaction.

So, if you are not using makeup primer, then you are really missing out on an amazing product because it really makes a huge difference if you do apply it.

Disclaimer:  Always do a patch test first, or check with your medical professional, to see if your skin is allergic to a silicone-based polymer that's present in the primers (the dimethicone).  Everyone's skin is different so results can vary from person to person.  Please discontinue use if your skin does not react well to it.

What's your makeup routine? Do you wear a full face of makeup every day or prefer to keep it simple? Do you use a primer; if yes which one suits you the best? Let me know in the comment section below.  I would love to know.

Look Your Best This Monsoon Season

After the months of scorching summer, a magical monsoon is here again!  It’s the time to enjoy the lush greenery around.  A cool breeze has already set in with the rains of monsoon.  Everyone got relief from the blazing heat and getting a refreshed, clean look which soothes the eyes and brings a smile to our faces.  And my mind……ahhhh!! It dances to the melodious tune of drizzle in a ballroom of nature.

Walking and roaming around in the rains might sound crazy to some of you, but trust me it’s fun to take a stroll during a rain shower and feel the raindrops on your skin.  It’s just okay if you skip and/or forget to take care of your skin and body for quite some time while cherishing the lovely season in full swing.  But you cannot dare to skip and/or forget for the whole season because your skin could not always be ready for the monsoon fun and it requires some extra care in this season.  Your skin and hair both suffer due to high humidity and dampness that is present in the atmosphere and they tend to look dull, thus you need to pay more attention and adjust your skin and hair care routine as per the season.

So, here I mention some of the important skin and hair care tips that should be followed during this season to fight off all the monsoon-specific skin and hair woes and to maintain your skin and hair healthy.  Stay beautiful this monsoon by following these skin and hair care tips:

Clean your face:

Rainy days usually tend to cause a plenty of dirt, grime, and pollutants to accumulate on the surface of the skin that may further clog the pores which could lead to the development of acne or bumps on the skin.  So in order to keep your skin clear, regardless of your skin type, you should wash your face at least thrice a day and definitely after staying out for a long period of time to remove the dirt and grime from the surface of your skin that can clog your pores.  Also, don’t forget to clean your face before going to bed.

Exfoliate your skin:

Dead skin blocks your pores making your skin looks dull and lifeless.  So the best way to avoid having this is to exfoliate.  Exfoliating your skin helps in removing the dead skin cells thus promoting a smooth and supple skin.  Use a face scrub twice a week to exfoliate your skin.

Use a Toner:

Toning is another process that helps in keeping your skin healthy.  Toners not only balance the ph levels of your skin, but it also provides antioxidant benefits, it allows your skin to breathe while keeping it refreshed, soothed, and hydrated.  I would suggest you opt for an alcohol-free toner and yeah a flower based toner is ideal.  Even rose water can be used; this is a natural and powerful toner.

Related Post:  The Face Toners Manual

Use Moisturizer:

One needs to keep the skin hydrated in all the climates and monsoon season is not an exception. So make sure to use a nourishing moisturizer to keep your skin flake free, soft, and supple.  Also, you can even add 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil to your moisturizer.  It helps to pamper your skin and thus promoting a healthy skin.

Wear your Sunscreen:

One of the most common mistakes people commit is ditching their sunscreen in monsoon.  Beat the misconception that sunscreen should only be used in summers.  It doesn’t matter if its cloudy outside or raining heavily, you need to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays because it is still there, so it's important to wear your sunscreen every time you step out.  Use a reliable sunscreen that has a good SPF.  And yeah one should opt for a gel based or water-resistant sunscreen in monsoon or the sunscreen that is specially formulated for swimming.

Say “NO” to heavy makeup - “Less is More”:

Flaunt your natural look in monsoon.  And if you can’t step out without your makeup then go minimal because sometimes going minimal is the key to look at your best and there is no better season than monsoon for a “minimal makeup” look.

Avoid letting the rain to cast a shadow on your makeup by following these steps:

1.  Primer: Always, and I mean ALWAYS, use a primer before you apply your makeup.  It will give you a smooth canvas to work with and will help your makeup last longer.  Invest in a good, lightweight, and oil-free primer that last longer.
2.  Foundation:  Avoid using foundation; it will make your skin look patchy.  Instead, you could go for a light-textured BB cream for a natural finish look and you can even use a face powder but make sure that you only use it enough to remove the grease off your face.
3.  Blush:  Choose depending on how your skin behaves.  If your skin behaves normally, use cream-based formula and if it gets oilier in the humidity and dampness then choose a powder blush.  While applying your blush, do not overdo it, apply minimally and blend it well for the natural look.  Dusty pinks and peaches are the great shades to choose from.
4.  Eye:  Avoid heavy and dramatic eye makeup.  Make sure to use waterproof cosmetics -- kajal, mascara, eyeliner to survive in the rains.  Transparent mascara is my personal favorite.  Say no to smokey eyes.  As far as the eyeshadow goes, use powder based for oily lids and creamy for normal skins.  Shades like creamy pink, champagne, beige, light brown, pastel, and nude complement the season.
5.  Lip Color:  Lipstick can add glamour to your monsoon look.  So invest in the best quality lipstick that will survive the monsoon spell and look ravishing on you.  Avoid lip gloss and cream finish lipsticks as it will get sticky when you get wet in the rains, hence opt for matte ones instead.

Tangle-free Hair:

-- Wash your hair more often during this season with a good cleansing shampoo and never wash it with water alone as it’ll dry and become frizzy.  Don’t forget to wash your hair every time you get drenched in rain to avoid bacteria to breed on the scalp.
-- Make sure to use a leave-in conditioner to keep the frizz at bay.  Henna is also a good natural conditioner and is actually very cooling.
-- During the monsoon, nothing is as good as hair oil massage for your hair.  It naturally boosts the moisture in your hair which revitalizes dry stands and offers deep conditioning too.
Avoid using serums and mousse.

Follow these tips and keep enjoying rains.

The Face Toners Manual

If you want a great skin, then a proper skin care routine is a must.  It is a key to a beautiful skin.  It requires regular “CTM (cleansing, toning, and moisturizing) regime,” which is a primary aspect of skin care routine and this goes for everyone irrespective of the skin type.  However, toning is the step that many people miss out on or just skip it often.  And what made me say that? Recently I have done a post, reviewing one of the toners and I have received a number of queries pertaining to toners such as what is it, what it does and is it really necessary to use it, so I just thought to talk about toners today with you all.

Facial toner or skin toner is a water-based solution that is packed with much more than hydrogen and oxygen that tones the skin.  Toning is an essential step in your skincare routine, that provides multiple benefits for all skin types.  It plays a vital role in ensuring you have a healthy and clean facial appearance.  But, sometimes toners are really very confusing, especially for those who don’t know about this, because of their different names.  Toner is also known as a tonic or I would say skin tonic, skin-freshener, skin bracer, pre-lotion, and astringent.

Originally, toners came out in the 1900s.  The idea behind the skin tonics (toner) was to ‘soothe the nerves’ or to ‘take the fatigue out of tired muscles.’  The most common ingredients used in toners included witch hazel (a plant) extract, alcohol, camphor, boric acid, tincture of benzoin, and tincture of sage which all have antiseptic properties and are the examples of astringents.  In addition to that, they also used glycerin, some fragrant scent, and flower water for coloring to make it look pretty.

Related Post:  An Ideal Guide to Makeup Primer

The purpose of using astringents like alcohol, witch hazel extract, and tincture of benzoin etc is to cool/refresh the skin.  It also appears to have a skin tightening effect, reduce blackheads and blemishes; and not only does it stimulates blood circulation, but also it close pores.  Thus, toners with astringents properties play an important role.

However, back then, calling a substance an astringent generally meant that it had a stronger formulation i.e. it contained more alcohol (which dries out skin) and/or zinc or aluminum.  So some beauty companies started to make products for different types of skin.  For normal to combination skins, the toners are called as a “skin tonic” which contains fewer astringents products and those with a high concentration of alcohol labeled as “astringent” for oily skins.

Nowadays, toners are more efficient and advanced; so depending on the formulation, they do a whole range of things.  They not only balance the ph levels (when you wash/clean your face the pH level of your skin becomes imbalanced) of the skin, but also they prepare your skin for the next step of your skincare routine as well as they remove dead skin cells, excess oils, or even any leftover residues from cleanser (such as chorines and minerals found in tap water) and makeup.  They also shrink the pores of the skin, prevent blackheads, tighten the skin, and provide anti-aging nourishment.  Along with that, it provides anti-oxidant benefits, it allows your skin to breathe while keeping it refreshed, soothed, and hydrated.   And yeah, while some toners penetrate as deep as possible working on the layers of your skin to do what serums are made to do; others can be used as a facial mist that you can use throughout the day to refresh or rehydrate your skin.

You can either use a toner that is homemade such as rose water, green tea, or lavender, or a brand-name skin toner sold in your retailer's aisle, but you should incorporate them into your skincare routine.  Just remember to avoid using toners that contain alcohol because alcohol as a main component in any skincare product is a problem and it can excessively dry out your skin.  Nevertheless, all the alcohol isn't bad for your skin, but it just depends on the percentage and which type of alcohol it is because there are other types of alcohols too which are known as fatty alcohols and they are completely non-irritating and can be exceptionally beneficial for your skin.

So, if you aren’t using a toner yet, then you should be.  CTM is the simplest ways to a good layer of healthy skin.  And of course, don’t forget to exfoliate and protect your skin from sun damage by using a good sunscreen.  It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, female or male; you should do these things.  Starting a proper skincare routine is something like starting a retirement policy. The earlier you start, the better it is, and the less guilt you have to cope with later on.

What's your skincare routine? What products do you use? Let me know in the comment section below.
