Updated in 2026: I first wrote this article several years ago. While I've refreshed it over time, my belief remains the same: forgiveness isn't about pretending the hurt never happened—it's about choosing not to let it control your future.
Have you ever replayed a painful conversation in your mind over and over again—even years later?
Someone may have forgotten what they said, yet you're still carrying the weight of it. I think most of us have been there. You, know on certain parts of our lives, we cannot escape being hurt by the words or actions of others and this is the reality of inviting people into our lives. At times, we have loose tongues and careless words that leave deep wounds. We can even be hurt by strangers. We get wounded. Sadly, our lives can be disrupted by the actions of others. But that doesn't mean making yourself a target or letting the offender off the hook. Instead, you should help yourself and let yourself come to peace with what had happened.
Whether it’s a simple, straightforward spat with your better half/family member/friend, or a long-held resentment towards them, an unresolved dispute can be extremely stressful. It can undercut the interpersonal relationships and sometimes it can even go deeper than you may realize. It can lead to mental anguish and may affect your physical health too.
You may have noticed how your body reacts depending on how you feel. When you get angry, your heart races and your breathing becomes faster. This activates the body's fight-or-flight response, leading to several physical changes. During prolonged stress, your heart rate and blood pressure spike up temporarily, your immune system can weaken, and you may even experience insomnia, anxiety, or depression. Even after the argument is over, your mind may continue replaying the incident. Holding on to resentment doesn't just affect our emotions—it affects our overall well-being too. Fortunately, there is one powerful way to interrupt this cycle and begin healing: forgiveness. Yes, forgiveness can be one of the most powerful medicines for emotional healing. It helps calm our minds, reduce stress, and promote better emotional and physical well-being.
But the question is what forgiveness really is? Is it just about saying the words?
No, it’s not so at all.
It’s not just about saying the words. Instead, forgiveness is about the goodness in you. It is a decision that an individual makes to conquer the hurt inflicted upon them by the wrongdoer. It’s an act of letting go of negative feelings that one have towards someone who has wronged them.
Forgiveness is not just a one-time act, it’s a deliberate process and it might take an amount of time to work through our emotional baggage and pain after certain offenses committed against us before we can truly forgive. Although you may initially struggle to forgive the wrongdoer, there are still the reasons to “let it go” and set yourself free from the burden that comes with holding onto a grudge.
There was a time when I held on to hurt for much longer than I should have. I believed forgiving someone meant admitting that what they did was okay. Over time, however, I realized forgiveness wasn't about excusing the hurt or pretending it never happened. It was about giving myself permission to move forward instead of allowing that pain to define me. That realization completely changed the way I looked at forgiveness.
To forgive someone, it often helps to begin with empathy. Try to understand the feelings or circumstances of the person who seeks your forgiveness. Trying to understand someone's actions doesn't mean you excuse them. Sometimes it simply helps you decide how you want to move forward. So, yes put yourself in the wrongdoer’s shoes and then decide.
Nevertheless, your decision to forgive someone doesn’t mean shutting down your own feelings, it doesn’t mean what happened to you wasn’t wrong, it doesn't mean excusing the wrong done to you, nor it does mean forgetting because it's normal and usual for memories to be triggered in the future, but it does mean acknowledging that the price of being alive includes some inescapable pain and forgiving the wrongdoer remove the power for the hurt to destroy you or to define you.

As time passes, many people find themselves asking one difficult question: "To forgive or not to forgive?"
Well, forgiveness is indeed a choice that needs to be made as often as your emotions shift. It is a kind of gift that you give to yourself to free you from the past hurt, pain, grudges and release you into the present.
Forgiveness is the spirit of letting go. It signifies faith—faith in God, faith in healing, and sometimes, faith that people can change. At the same time, forgiveness doesn't always mean allowing someone back into your life. There are situations where protecting yourself and maintaining healthy boundaries is the wisest choice. There are some people who are mean-spirited, obnoxious, and/or untrustworthy, and who may never change no matter what happens or what you do. In such situations, you need to stop expecting them to be different and instead change the way you respond to them. You can choose peace without choosing continued access. Some wounds run incredibly deep, such as abuse, repeated betrayal, or ongoing harm, and healing may look different for every person. Setting boundaries and protecting yourself is not the opposite of forgiveness—it can be an important part of it.
What if you are the wrongdoer and you seek forgiveness for your misstep?
The best things to do are look into the person’s eyes and express your guilt, your regression, and/or your apology with your eyes, your gestures, your words, and the tone of your voice and basically your heart. These are the actions that will comfort you both. So go ahead and apologize for your wrongdoing to the people that you really have to; it is possible you will end up a much better and a fulfilling relationship.
People will continue to wound you through your life and it’s only up to you not to hold on to the betrayals. As long as you're in a state of withholding forgiveness, you’ll feel like you're being trapped in a prison of your own making. So don’t let the past offenses keep its arms around your neck. Leave the pain and bitterness behind by bestowing the gift of forgiveness upon the wrongdoer so you can enjoy the present.
Sometimes forgiveness changes the other person. More often, it changes us.
Just remember: Forgiveness really matters, and the forgiver will certainly be its primary beneficiary.
Stay Blessed, Be Happy...!! :-)

I posted comment earlier on this, not sure if it went through. Great post that really touched my heart. You said it right when we are hurt, we experience all those symptoms (heart rate spike and heavy breathing). Love your message on forgiveness!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very insightful post, especially because no matter your creed, forgiveness is a necessary action to coexist in this society. If you don't forgive, I've personally felt how hard it can be to live your day to day. Wonderful post!

ReplyDeleteForgiveness is one of the most beautiful thing we should perform as much as we can. If we can all forgive and forget more often, the world will be a better place.
ReplyDeleteExcellent information about such a necessary part of life. If we don't learn to forgive, we suffer...not the wrong doer. Unless we're the wrong doer, then we suffer twice as much!I will be sharing your tips!

ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right in saying that forgiveness is a deliberate choice leading to actions of letting go. Not easy for sure, but important as in your words, "an unresolved dispute can be extremely stressful". It hurts and burdens us more! And who would not want to feel light right?
ReplyDeleteI believe forgiveness is for you, not for the person you're forgiving. You can't live with hate in your heart. It's not healthy.
ReplyDeleteForgiveness is an important part of life however sometimes it's easier said than done. It takes a lot of strength I prefer to just cut my energy off from the situation or person to be honest and focus on more meaningful deserving things.
ReplyDeleteWow... .. Amazing piece.... Forgiveness really is a virtue of someone who doesn't have grudges and ego and free of pride.... After all as you pointed out..... It will greatly benefit the forgiver......
ReplyDeleteForgiveness is such an important part of living a healthy life. There seems to be this idea that if we forgive someone we're saying their actions are acceptable when in reality we're simply saying I'm not going to let your actions hurt me anymore.
ReplyDeleteAs they say, "To err is human, to forgive is divine". You have got to have a wonderful soul to forgive people. Letting go and moving on is not everybody's forte. It takes a lot of courage to do it.
